What happens at your first appointment

Your history and your results
The consultant goes through your symptoms, your medical and family history and any blood tests your GP has already done. Bring your glucose meter readings, recent bloods and a list of medicines.

Examination
A focused examination, which may include weight and blood pressure, checking the neck for thyroid enlargement, and looking for signs that point to a particular hormone problem.

Tests that change the plan
Most hormone conditions are confirmed with blood tests, sometimes timed to a particular time of day or done after a stimulation or suppression test. Imaging is arranged only where it changes management.

A plan you and your GP can follow
You leave with a written plan: what the diagnosis is, what treatment starts now, what is being monitored and when you are next reviewed. Your GP receives the same letter.

What is an endocrinologist and what do they treat?
An endocrinologist is a physician who specialises in hormones and the glands that produce them, including the thyroid, pancreas, adrenal and pituitary glands, ovaries and testes. They diagnose and treat diabetes, thyroid disease, PCOS, menopause and hormone imbalance, adrenal and pituitary disorders, osteoporosis and problems with weight and metabolism.
Do I need a GP referral to see an endocrinologist?
A GP referral is the usual route and most insurers require one. If you do not have a referral you can contact us through the referral form and we will help you arrange one.
How quickly can I be seen?
Appointments are offered as soon as the consultant has availability. Contact the clinic for the next available date; urgent referrals are triaged by the consultant.
What does a private endocrinology consultation cost, and is it covered by health insurance?
Fees are confirmed when your appointment is booked. Most Irish health insurance plans contribute towards consultant fees and many cover blood tests and scans in full or in part, depending on your plan. You receive a receipt to claim with.
Which hospital will I attend?
Endocrinology clinics are held at Beacon Hospital, Sandyford, Dublin 18. The clinic is confirmed when your appointment is booked.
Can you manage my diabetes long term or is it a one-off review?
Both. Some patients come for a single specialist review and a plan their GP then follows. Others, particularly with type 1 diabetes, insulin-treated type 2 diabetes or complex needs, stay under regular consultant review.
Do you see menopause and hormone-related conditions?
Yes. Perimenopause and menopause, hormone replacement therapy, PCOS, low testosterone and other hormone imbalance symptoms are all seen in the endocrinology clinic.
